(Washington) La ville américaine de Memphis se préparait vendredi à des manifestations en réaction à la publication, prévue à la fin de la journée, d’une vidéo montrant l’arrestation brutale par cinq policiers d’un Afro-Américain, mort trois jours après ce violent passage à tabac.
« Quand mon mari et moi sommes arrivés à l’hôpital et que j’ai vu mon fils, il était déjà mort. Ils l’avaient réduit en bouillie. Il avait des bleus partout, sa tête était enflée comme une pastèque », a raconté en larmes RowVaughn Wells, la mère de Tyre Nichols, dans une interview diffusée vendredi par la chaîne CNN.
La cheffe de la police de Memphis, Cerelyn Davis, a prévenu que la vidéo montrant l’interpellation de cet homme de 29 ans était « comparable, voire pire » à celle montrant l’arrestation policière violente de Rodney King en 1991. L’acquittement, un an plus tard, des quatre policiers impliqués, déclencha des émeutes sans précédent à Los Angeles.
« Nous prévoyons de partager la vidéo via un lien YouTube pour qu’elle soit accessible à tous. Ce sera fait en fin d’après-midi », a déclaré Mme Davis sur CNN, ajoutant que les images illustraient une « sorte d’effet de groupe » au sein des cinq policiers, qui sont eux-mêmes afro-américains.
« La vidéo est divisée en quatre séquences différentes […] the initial (road) control, the one near Tire’s house and the portable camera of several people on the spot, ”she said.
On January 7, police wanted to check Tire Nichols for a traffic violation. A “confrontation had taken place” with the agents and “the suspect had fled”, according to the police.
Caught up, Tire Nichols had been arrested in circumstances that the authorities have so far avoided describing precisely. The precise course of the events and their duration remain sources of questions, as does the time elapsed before the victim receives medical treatment.
Complaining of having difficulty breathing, hospitalized, Tire Nichols died three days later.

The five police officers were charged with murder and imprisoned. Four of them were later released on bail.
US President Joe Biden called in a statement for a “prompt, complete and transparent investigation” into this tragedy and called for the demonstrations to be “peaceful”.
The case finds a particular echo in a country still marked by the murder of George Floyd by a police officer, in May 2020, and the demonstrations against racism and police violence, which had followed, federated around the slogan “Black Lives Matter” .
And the drama has reignited the debate on police violence in the country.
