Real estate: tenants struggle to find accommodation

Some tenants search for many months before finding accommodation, despite stable income and permanent contracts.
South of La Rochelle (Charente-Maritime), a family, who arrived in the region nine months ago, bought a bungalow on credit for temporary accommodation. The parents, both on permanent contracts, earn around 4,000 euros net per month. However, the couple failed to view a single rental property. They ended up finding a small house to rent after nine months of searching. This struggle is shared by many French people. In Lyon (Rhône), Alizée, 30, on a permanent contract, cannot find accommodation with her 2,000 euros net per month.
“The market is blocked”
According to one agency, one of the reasons for this shortage is the difficulty of accessing property. “People could buy more easily with rates of 1%, so they let go of their homes (…) we were able to rent again“, explains Anaïs Khalatbari, real estate agent “Arche gestion”. For her, “the market is blocked, for sale or rental“. Two months after the start of her search, Alizée still has not found accommodation.
