Ten tips to outsmart baggage problems at airports

This text is part of the special book Plaisirs

Due to the problems associated with the disorganization of airports, losing your luggage is no longer so rare. Here are ten tips to avoid inconvenience upon arrival.

1. Prefer cabin baggage to large suitcases to be sent in the hold of the plane.

Good to know: Cabin baggage allowed on board must not exceed 55 cm in height, 40 cm in width and 23 cm in depth. Although there is no regulation weight, you should be able to slide it into the overhead compartment without assistance. Inside cabin baggage, liquids of 100 ml or less are allowed. However, the liquids transported cannot exceed 2 kg (75 fluid ounces) in total, per passenger.

2. In addition to cabin baggage, it is also permitted to bring one personal item, purse or backpack, on the plane. Place some necessary items in it for your trip, like a change of clothes, sandals or others.

3. Maximize your carry-on and backpack space by choosing lightweight clothes that won’t take up space and small travel sizes for your toiletries.

4. Choose mat clothes that allow several combinations to be matched with each other, to have a different look every day.

5. Find out about the activities planned and the weather at your destination, and bring only the clothes that are suitable for your stay.

6. Pack a pair of shoes in a style different from the ones you’ll be wearing on the plane. For example, if you leave with sports shoes, put in your cabin luggage other more chic shoes. Thus, you will have the possibility to vary your look. A pair of flip flops is a good choice if you are going to the South, because they are light and not bulky.

7. Before preparing your toiletry bag, make a list of essentials, including medicine, sunscreen and hair care. Keep only those which are absolutely necessary for your daily use and those which you cannot find either at the hotel or in the shops near your destination.

8. Get small travel sizes at the pharmacy or in the store, or transfer your favorite products to small containers. Seal them in an airtight bag before slipping them into your cabin baggage.

9. Board the plane with a coat, sweater or jacket that will keep you warm during the flight, but also at destination in anticipation of cooler evenings.

10. Slip into your cabin baggage, as in your checked suitcase, a business card with your telephone number. If your cabin baggage is moved and you cannot find it, we can contact you to collect it.
