Iraqi forces killed “ten terrorists in the last 24 hours” during an operation against fighters of the Islamic State (IS) group in desert areas of Iraq, the army announced in a press release on Sunday March 10.
Four people were killed on Sunday and six on Saturday in the Wadi al-Tharthar region, which stretches between the provinces of Salaheddine (north of Baghdad) and Al-Anbar (west of the Iraqi capital), according to state media.
The joint anti-IS operation, launched on Saturday in several provinces of northern and central Iraq, mobilizes the regular army and fighters from Hachd al-Chaabi, a coalition of former paramilitaries made up of pro-Iran armed groups, and officially integrated into the state security apparatus.
After a meteoric rise in power and the conquest of vast territories in Iraq and neighboring Syria, ISIS saw its “caliphate”self-proclaimed in 2014, collapsed under the influence of successive offensives in these two countries.
