The peak may not have passed yet. Three new Mediterranean departments will be placed on orange alert for the heat wave, Météo-France announced on Tuesday July 18. From midnight, Bouches-du-Rhône, Gard and Hérault will join Alpes-Maritimes, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Var, Vaucluse, Corse-du-Sud, Haute-Corse and Pyrénées-Orientales, already under vigilance. Heat spikes are expected locally at 40°C in Provence, Corsica and Occitanie, Météo-France reported.

The south-east of France is affected by a heat wave which is hitting the west of the Mediterranean basin, which is particularly suffering from the effects of global warming linked to human activities. Spain and Italy are severely affected, with temperatures approaching 48°C in Sardinia in particular.

The heat will persist in Paca and will increase in Languedoc

Seven departments were already on orange alert on Tuesday, a level meaning that residents are called upon to be “very vigilant” to the possible consequences of the event. The danger is greatest for the elderly, people with chronic illness or mental health disorders, people who regularly take medication, and people isolated”recalls the institute.

Many heat records were broken on Tuesday, from the Pyrenees to the Alps via Corsica. Temperatures will drop significantly from western Occitania to Rhône-Alpes on Wednesday, specifies Météo France. But the heat will persist in Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur, and will increase in Languedoc.
