“So… first day of school, last day of your lives.” “Something’s going to happen, and I don’t think you’re going to like it.” “I will kill you all.” These sentences are pronounced in a joking tone by ten American comedians in their stand-up show. However, there is nothing funny about them. But that’s precisely the goal of the Sandy Hook Promise association’s campaign, called “Just Joking” (“I’m kidding”): warn of the warning signs of school killings in the United States.
The video spot for this campaign, published Wednesday September 27 on Youtube and relayed in particular by the newspaper Release, compiles sentences actually spoken by perpetrators of shootings before they committed the act. They are slipped by actors, like Billy Eichner or David Cross, triggering laughter from the audience who have no idea of their significance. Little by little, the comedians explain to their audience where these strange jokes come from and the laughter stops.
According to a study by the National Institute of Justice, cited by Release48% of mass killers showed warning signs and warned family members or friends of what they were going to do. Their messages were not taken seriously.
The Sandy Hook Promise association was founded by parents of young victims of the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting on December 14, 2012, in Connecticut. She has since created an anonymous online platform to report individuals with suspicious behavior. With more guns than people, the United States has the highest gun death rate of any developed country.
