Medical deserts: teleconsultation booths close

Teleconsultation booths were to be the solution to compensate for the lack of doctors and specialists, but they would not be profitable enough. The pioneer of the sector has just closed its doors.

Spacious and equipped with the latest technologies, a medical teleconsultation cabin has been welcoming patients from four municipalities in Seine-et-Marne for three years. Since the end of September, it has now been closed, because the company which was in charge of it has just ceased its activity. All scheduled appointments to see a doctor remotely were canceled overnight. A new blow for the residents. “It is very difficult to find someone in a relatively short period of time,” laments one man.

When they were installed, these cabins represented hope for many communities lacking general practitioners. Seine-et-Marne had invested in ten cabins, up to 68,000 euros for large models, plus 10,000 euros in operating costs per year. A healthcare offering that users will miss.
