The safe bet

Gaslit

Our expectations were very high. And for good reason. With Julia Roberts and Sean Penn as headliners, it was hard to see how this miniseries from the Starz network could disappoint us. Our only fear was its premise, Watergate, a subject exploited time and time again on screen. Gold, Gaslit reveals an unknown face of the resounding scandal, responsible for the departure of President Richard Nixon in 1974. The story is articulated around the character of Martha Mitchell (charismatic Julia Roberts), wife of Richard Nixon’s attorney general, and above all, launcher of alert. The other couple at the heart of the screenplay, played by Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) and Betty Gilpin (glow), is equally intriguing. For now, the series is only offered in the original English version.

Guy Lafleur’s state funeral

The ceremony in tribute to the great hockey player will monopolize the airwaves on Tuesday. It’s the least we can say. On the Radio-Canada side, Patrice Roy will host a special program from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., which will be broadcast on ICI Télé and RDI. For TVA, LCN and TVA Sports, coverage will begin at 10 a.m. Pierre Bruneau will be at the helm, supported by Louis Jean and Michel Bergeron. The TVA helicopter will follow the procession from the Bell Center to the Marie-Reine-du-Monde cathedral, we promise. Finally, RDS and Noovo will follow the events simultaneously from 9 a.m. Pierre Houde will hold the reins.

Native immigrants

In this 13-episode documentary series produced by Zone 3 (Second chance) and directed by Félix Trépanier (Survivalists), journalist Raed Hammoud travels across Quebec to discover people from elsewhere who have successfully integrated into their adopted community. The host will notably meet, in Lebel-sur-Quévillon (Nord-du-Québec), Salah Ben Hassouna, a teacher and electrician from Tunisia who now organizes Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day. In Sainte-Thérèse, in Mauricie, he will meet Dora Maria Caro Rios, who settled there to open a Mexican restaurant. Hammoud will also discuss with Jean-François Kacou, an Ivorian who holds the position of general manager of Percé, in Gaspésie.

TV5, Tuesday at 8 p.m.

The roll of the dice

Saturday Night Live

Arcade Fire

We must admit: we more or less followed Saturday Night Live This year. Most of the time, we preferred to catch up on the sketches that aroused the most reactions on the Internet, during the days following their broadcast. But this weekend, we’ll be watching the comedy show live as Arcade Fire will be performing there. This will be the fifth passage for Win Butler and company. This participation is timely, because on Friday, the Montreal collective will release their new album, entitled WE. Worth noting, Benedict Cumberbatch will host the television show which – hopefully – will give us a good laugh.

Global and NBC, Saturday at 11:30 p.m.
