The throw of the dice: The Regime
Three years after starring in the excellent crime thriller Mare of EasttownKate Winslet returns to the small screen in this HBO network miniseries written by Will Tracy (Succession), and directed by Stephen Frears (The Queen) and Jessica Hobbs (The Crown). The British actress plays the chancellor of a fictional European country which is beginning to falter. On paper, it seems like a sure home run, and according to the first images posted online last year, this blockbuster will offer a (happy?) mix of political drama, suspense and absurd comedy. We also note the presence of Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton and Hugh Grant in the credits.
Crave, from Sunday
The return : Get me out of here!
After having achieved great success in 2023, the adventure reality show returns to the air with nine new star participants: Rosalie Vaillancourt, Audrey Roger, Dave Morissette, Clodine Desrochers, Patricia Paquin, Philippe Laprise, Alex Perron, Sophie Durocher and Sébastien Toutant. Landing in the city of Panama in evening attire (sequins included), the candidates will quickly put on their camper uniform to overcome tests involving different kinds of bugs. Posted online at the beginning of the month and rich in shrill screams, the trailer suggests a second season “a little bit rougher”, confirms Alexandre Barrette, who returns to his position as host with Jean-Philippe Dion.
TVA, Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
The novelty : Elsbeth
Telephiles who followed religiously The Good Wife (2009-2016) and The Good Fight (2017-2022) have unforgettable memories of Elsbeth Tascioni, the eccentric but brilliant lawyer played by Carrie Preston. In this new spin-off series, this time entirely centered around her, the colorful lawyer leaves Chicago to undertake new investigative work in New York, with the police department. Will this secondary character that we loved so much make a good heroine? The jury is still deliberating. One thing is certain, the trailer suggests a happy mix of drama and humor. And with Robert and Michelle King at the helm, the verdict could well be positive.
CBS and Global, starting Thursday at 10 p.m.
The documentary : The soundtrack of the 1990s
Because we are curious to revisit the 1990s in music through a perspective other than American or Quebecois, this French documentary catches our attention. The description of the show speaks of a decade marked by “Madonna, MC Solaar, Patrick Bruel, Alain Souchon and Mylène Farmer”, but also by the rise of rap, the surge of indie rock and the emergence of techno. Directed by Sylvain Bergère, this 120-minute program, originally broadcast on France 3, also includes interviews conducted in the studio with Axelle Red, Florent Pagny, Étienne Daho and Gaëtan Roussel. It will also discuss the Berlin Wall and the September 11 attacks.
