The essential

The night Laurier Gaudreault woke up

Released in December in Quebec, Xavier Dolan’s first TV series has just landed in France on Canal+. Its arrival in France serves as an excuse to remind us how much it deserves the detour, for its tragic plot, its neat cinematography, its inspired production, its nostalgic soundtrack (long live the old pop hits of the 1990s!) and, above all, its actors in great, even very great, form, including Anne Dorval (masterful), Patrick Hivon and Magalie Lépine-Blondeau. With The night Laurier Gaudreault woke upDolan constructs a dense universe from which one does not emerge unscathed after a five-hour snorkeling.

Eyes closed

Abandoning the oversized glasses of nurse-sexologist Sarah (Without an appointment) and the regional-kitsch pageantry of Chantal (The night Laurier Gaudreault woke up), Magalie Lépine-Blondeau portrays a budding teacher/detective who tries to explain the reasons why her brother would have committed irreparable harm 30 years earlier. Written by Anita Rowan (Chaos, Oh) and produced by Jeanne Leblanc (5e rank), this miniseries has some flaws. Its initial premise let us predict an effective and well-crafted thriller, but the abundance of false leads on which its heroine ventures over the course of six episodes ends up tiring. Positive point: it puts forward several talented actors, but who we see less often on the small screen, including Anie Pascale.

Nurses in Australia

Nurses in Australia

On call 24/7 missing ? While waiting for the return of Télé-Québec’s popular docu-series, try this new Canal Vie acquisition which, as its title suggests, takes a behind-the-scenes look at hospitals in Sydney, Australia, through the eyes of the nurses who are deployed there. The first hour-long episode, which airs this week, focuses on the staff at St Vincent, a hospital in the heart of the bar and nightclub district, hence its particularly busy weekends. We also learn that in Australia, 1 nurse in 10 comes from the United Kingdom. One downside: the French dubbing in voice over (we hear the original voice in the background) is very annoying.

The Super Bowl

Rihanna

The LVIIe Super Bowl will oppose the Chiefs of Kansas City to the Eagles of Philadelphia, but the poster which arouses our interest is that of the spectacle which will be presented during the event in the middle of the State Farm Stadium of Glendale, in Arizona: Rihanna. The Barbadian artist has been rather discreet in recent years. We cross our fingers so that she takes advantage of the concert to announce her return to disc, she who has not launched an album of original material since the excellent Anti in 2016. We also pray that she sings Umbrella, Don’t Stop the Music, Rude Boy, We Found Love, Diamonds And Work. Thanks for granting both of our requests, Rihanna.

RDS, CTV, TSN and FOX, Sunday, at 6:30 p.m.
