The essential: The test of words

Adaptation of the British format The Write-Offs, this documentary series tells the story of Alexe (29 years old), Marc-Alexandre (35 years old), Mathys (16 years old), Sylvie (66 years old) and Nicolas (66 years old), five people deemed functionally illiterate. For 16 weeks, director Paul-Maxime Corbin (On call 24/7, Numbers 1) follows each of them, while they follow an intensive program to compensate for their shortcomings. After each month, we test their progress through activities that we take for granted when we know how to read and write, such as finding our way, cooking a recipe, etc. Produced by Sphere Media and animated with a lot of empathy (but without gnangnan) by Patricia Paquin, The test of words proves to be a human experience as touching as it is topical.

Since its debut on the air in January, the ratings of True Detective – Night Country follow an upward curve in the United States. We’re not surprised. The author and director has concocted a thriller as well crafted as it is snowy, tinged with spirituality, in which Jodie Foster (an Emmy selection is almost guaranteed) and Kali Reis play two police officers who, despite their differences, join forces to try to elucidate the disappearance of a group of scientists. The novelty : One Day

In 2011, Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess co-starred in a rather repetitive romantic drama based on a best-selling novel by David Nicholls called One Day, which told the story of love and long-term friendship between Emma and Dexter, which we find every year on the same day: July 15. Thirteen years after the failure of the film, Netflix is ​​offering the series… and unfortunately, it is more or less convincing. Certainly, the TV format suits the story better, but we still end up rolling our eyes at the procrastination of the heroes, played by Ambika Mod (This Is Going to Hurt) and Leo Woodall (The White Lotus), which lack chemistry. We stay far from Normal People.

The throw of the dice: FEM

You may have known him at Zenithas representative of the Z. The singer Lennikim plays in FEMa series directed by Marianne Farley (director of the short film Daisy, nominated for an Oscar in 2019) which tells the story of a young 16-year-old hyperpop musician named Zav, who questions his gender identity. Fearing to disappoint those close to him, the budding artist decides to use social networks to anonymously experience his femininity and share his songs. Based on an original idea by screenwriter Maxime Beauchamp, this fiction also stars Émily Bégin, Marie-Soleil Dion and Danny Gilmore, in addition to counting on Tranna Wintour and Sasha Baga as content consultants.
