An unprecedented general strike in Israel, demanding an agreement for the release of hostages still held by Hamas, was interrupted at midday on Monday, September 2 by a Tel Aviv court. The population is divided on the issue.
On the morning of Monday, September 2, no trams were running in Jerusalem and buses were stopped at Tel Aviv airport (Israel). Dozens of flights were also delayed. The general strike movement is unprecedented in the country, but unevenly followed and interrupted as early as midday on Monday. A Tel Aviv court ordered the end of the movement which demands an agreement for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.
The population is divided. “These cancelled flights are not serious. We have no choice, the country and the hostages come first”says a woman. “I think it’s an illegal strike, a political strike. They just want to get rid of a democratically elected government.”another Israeli woman said. In support of the strike, demonstrators attempted to block a highway near Tel Aviv on Monday afternoon. The authorities carried out very forceful arrests.
