Teen arrested in Montreal for assaulting two Hasidic Jews

A teenager was arrested Thursday for two assaults allegedly committed last January on two members of the Hasidic Jewish community in the Outremont borough of Montreal.

The Service de police la ville de Montréal (SPVM) released a video of one of the attacks on Wednesday, captured by a surveillance camera, so that citizens could identify the suspect of these possible hate crimes.

The young man finally gave himself up to the police station the day after this broadcast.

The two assaults were allegedly committed on the same evening, January 20. According to the SPVM summary, the first victim was walking on Van Horne Avenue when she was shouted at by the suspect. He then allegedly attacked her by pushing her violently and throwing her to the ground, before fleeing.

Later that same evening, the suspect allegedly assaulted another victim, at the corner of Bernard and Outremont avenues. The victim allegedly received a violent kick in the lower back, which would have thrown him to the ground.

Thursday morning, investigators from the Hate Crimes and Incidents Module (MICH) of the SPVM’s Urban Prevention and Security Division arrested the minor for assault.

He was released on conditions and is scheduled to appear on May 5 before the Youth Division of the Court of Quebec.
