(Calgary) An appeal filed by members of the 2018 Canadian junior team to an independent panel has been adjourned until the end of the criminal trial involving those players.
A London, Ontario court has heard legal arguments in the sexual assault case of five former ECJ members. The trial is expected to take place next year.
Dillon Dube, Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, Cal Foote and Alex Formenton were charged earlier this year in connection with an alleged sexual assault at a hotel in 2018. All five plan to defend themselves against the allegations and have opted for a jury trial.
Hockey Canada has asked an independent arbitration panel to determine whether any members of the 2018 JEC violated the national sport organization’s code of conduct and, if so, what sanctions should be imposed on those players.
Shortly after the committee issued its final arbitration report to all parties involved, a notice of appeal was filed. An independent committee was then formed to oversee the appeal hearing.
The independent appeals board granted a motion to adjourn the appeal hearing until the end of the criminal trial.
Hockey Canada said in a statement that it has attempted to proceed expeditiously throughout the appeal process. The organization added that any further delays were a result of the appeals committee’s decision on the adjournment motion, not its failure to do so.
