According to a survey by the Ecolhuma Observatory that France Inter was able to consult exclusively on Thursday June 8, the teachers in the majority by themselves by themselves: “80% of teacher training is self-training” And “only 20% of the training activities taken are offered or imposed by their institution”.

This is explained by the fact that France is the worst student of European countries regarding the continuous training of teachers with the fewest days of training and often very long delays, “sometimes a year”specifies Francine, teacher in a professional high school. “You must have a certain number of candidates for the training request to be validated.she explains. Sometimes, there must also be a grouping between two establishments so the delays can be long”.

Training “on the Internet and social networks”

Faced with this situation, some teachers therefore train on their own. Among those who choose to be self-taught, 60% do so “on the Internet and social networks”. Florence Rizzo, founder of Ecolhuma (an association that supports teachers and school heads), who conducted this survey “with just over a thousand teachers”, details other figures: “45% of teachers train in the evening and 55% train often during the weekend”. Training carried out on free time therefore, “a little invisible, not necessarily recognized and therefore not valued”.

“I do it for reasons of efficiency and speed, it is through these media that I find the answers to best support my students.”

Francine has been a teacher for 20 years and expresses her need to be “formed along the length […] It is something that is close to my heart, to continue to evolve in my profession and to develop my practices”. She would also like the training offered by National Education to be “more varied, easier to access” and clearer on the question of how long they will take.

The Observatory’s survey shows that among the topics most sought after by teachers wishing to train, the needs are primarily for training “practical-practical or directly usable in class”, explains Florence Rizzo. So these are related topics. “motivation, student engagement and children with special needs”. “When you have a dyslexic child, an autistic child. You need to find an answer to know how to support that child, that year”concludes the co-founder.
