A race against time takes place to the wide Tunisian coasts to avoid an oil spill. An oil tanker carrying 750 tons of diesel sank in the Gulf of Gabes on Saturday April 16, for a reason still unknown.
In the morning Saturday, April 16, only a piece of the tanker’s hull, which contained 750 tonnes of diesel, was still visible. The the evening before, the ship was en route to the island of Malta, when it changed course to seek shelter from a storm. Barely entered the Tunisian Gulf of Gabès, it begins to take on water. The crew is evacuated just before the sinking of the boat, which will take place in the early morning.
On Sunday April 17, the first divers were sent to the scene in search of fuel leaks. Anti-pollution buoys and protective tarpaulins have been prepared on the port of Gabès, mBut environmental associations fear the worst. The Gabès court has opened an investigation into the sinking.
