A shooting that occurred in broad daylight in the parking lot of a crowded mall. A young man targeted by six projectiles from a gun. A gunman chasing him. A restaurant employee narrowly escaping bullets. Passersby and panicked customers. Part of this terrifying scene captured by surveillance cameras was presented in court during the trial of the three possible accomplices in this case of attempted murder which takes place against the backdrop of a conflict between street gangs.
Emmanuel Love Luberisse, Rodolph Surin and his brother Jean Rhodny Surin, three men linked to street gangs, are suspected of being the shooter’s accomplices.
This episode of violence that occurred on September 12, 2021 in the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville took place in the busy parking lot of Galeries Normandie.
A 32-year-old man known to the police was injured by a gun when he left an SAQ establishment. Everything suggests that he is the person targeted.
He is chased by an armed man who fires at least six bullets in his direction, according to the facts alleged by the prosecution. The victim then takes refuge in a pizzeria.
Two bullets hit the restaurant and a third hits the door frame. Another projectile passes through the window of the establishment, ends up in the kitchen and narrowly misses an employee, specifies the prosecutor of the Crown Me Matthew Ferguson.
The victim is wounded in the lower body under the eyes of terrified passers-by. The shooter abandoned his pursuit and returned to the vehicle, which quickly fled.
“The three men are suspected of having abetted the alleged shooter,” Ms.e Ferguson Friday morning in court.
Conflict between gangs
The victim’s attack is said to be set against a conflict between two rival gangs. “The rivalry between these gangs is at the origin of many firearm discharge events in public places in Laval and Montreal and still seems to be current,” said the Crown.
Shortly before the attempted murder, the victim met three individuals when entering the SAQ to make purchases. “These three individuals are the accused,” said the Crown prosecutor, Mr.e Matthew Ferguson, in his statement opening the trial, Friday morning at the Montreal courthouse.
Inside the SAQ, the trio observed the victim carefully. According to the prosecution, the three defendants are linked to the shooter. The four men would have arrived at the mall at the same time, in two different cars.
After the visit to the SAQ, Luberisse reportedly returned to the vehicle to join the suspected man. “The images show that the two vehicles are moving in the parking lot in such a way as to intercept their target”, described Me Ferguson.
When the victim leaves the SAQ and crosses the parking lot, the vehicle transporting the shooter starts and moves at an angle to the victim. The alleged shooter comes out chasing the victim, who takes refuge in the Double Pizza restaurant.
Eyewitnesses witnessed this scene. Indeed, the shooting occurred in broad daylight in the parking lot of a shopping center where essential businesses were still open and where many passers-by and vehicles were circulating.
The trial of the three possible accomplices defended by Me Daniele Roy, M.e Anthony El-Haddad and M.e Ludovic Dufour is due to continue next week. The main suspect will have a separate trial set for a later date.
