It had been a quarter of a century since tensions had been so high between China and Taiwan. Thursday August 4, Beijing carried out its threats, a few days after the visit of Nancy Pelosi, president of the American House of Representatives, on the island. These military maneuvers are unprecedented.
Thursday, August 4, eleven ballistic missiles were fired by the Chinese army towards Taiwan. The Chinese army publicly affirms its satisfaction. “We have achieved all our objectives. These are successful exercises in the Taiwan Strait. Our combat forces in real conditions are optimal”says Commander Jin Zong of the People’s Liberation Army.
“These maneuvering areas go from north to south, from east to west. It is in fact an air and sea blockade of Taiwan”, says Captain Gian Chang Yu, of the Taiwanese Ministry of Defense. These Chinese maneuvers should last until Monday August 8th. Even if this is the most serious crisis since 1996 between Beijing and Taipei, the Taiwanese are used to living under threat. Some still fear an escalation or an incident.
