The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense said on Saturday June 24 that eight Chinese military planes crossed the “median line” of the Taiwan Strait, which separates the island from the mainland, and approached its waters. The archipelago has feared an invasion from China for many years.

The Ministry of Defense claimed that 19 planes, including J-10 and J-16 fighters, were detected around its territory. Eight of these aircraft crossed the “middle line of the Taiwan Strait”. “In addition, five Chinese navy ships carried out a joint combat patrol”continued the ministry, which said it was monitoring the situation closely and had deployed its patrol aircraft and vessels in response to the incident.

Taiwan lives under constant threat of invasion from China, which considers the island a province it has yet to reunite with the rest of its territory since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949. Relations between Beijing and Taipei have deteriorated in recent years and China has increased aerial incursions into Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (Adiz).
