Since 1er March, Quebec City’s libraries are operating slowly, and striking employees are showing patience and civility towards the few visitors who dare to cross their picket lines.
For us, readers, we had to adapt our habits according to the restrictions, namely the opening of three libraries at limited hours, without being able to reserve books. People who don’t have computers at home have had to find a way to work or communicate differently. This downtime will also have consequences on the purchase of new literary works or on the planning of cultural activities. Again, users will continue to be penalized as well as children who cannot flourish without these centers of culture.
Where the problem lies most is that we do not feel the interest or urgency for city officials to come to an agreement with employees. Once again, the situation gives the impression that culture is placed very low in their priorities.
We would like to see the City make a gesture that would resemble a positive step towards finding a solution to the current conflict and thus feel that culture is essential for it.
