Syrian soldier injured in Israeli strikes near Damascus

(Damascus) Israel carried out airstrikes near Damascus on Wednesday, seriously injuring a Syrian soldier, according to the state-run Sana news agency.

“At approximately 1:05 a.m. (6:05 p.m. Eastern Time, Tuesday), the Israeli enemy carried out an aerial assault from the occupied Golan Heights, targeting several positions southwest of Damascus,” Sana said, citing a military source.

A soldier was “seriously injured” in the attack, which also caused material damage, the agency added, according to which the Syrian anti-aircraft defense intercepted several of the Israeli missiles.

An AFP correspondent heard explosions overnight in the Syrian capital.

Since the beginning of the war in Syria in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes against Syrian regime positions as well as Iranian and Hezbollah forces, allies of Damascus and sworn enemies of Israel.

Israel rarely comments on these strikes on a case-by-case basis, but says it wants to prevent Iran from gaining a foothold on its doorstep.
