Syria claims to have intercepted Israeli missiles

(Damascus) Syria said on Monday that its anti-aircraft defense intercepted Israeli missiles in the Damascus area.

“Our anti-aircraft defense intercepted a missile strike by the Israeli aggressor near Damascus,” the official Syrian agency Sana announced.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based organization, the strikes targeted an area near Damascus airport, where armed groups backed by Iran and fighters from the Lebanese Hezbollah are present.

Since the beginning of the civil war in Syria in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in its neighbor, targeting positions of the Syrian army, pro-Iranian forces and Lebanese Hezbollah.

The Jewish state rarely comments on its strikes against Syria, but says it will not allow Iran to expand its influence in Syria.
