Syria: Aleppo airport out of service after Israeli strike

Aleppo airport in northern Syria was targeted at dawn on Tuesday by an Israeli strike that put it out of service, the official Sana news agency said.

“At exactly 2:07 a.m. (23:07 GMT), the Israeli enemy carried out an aerial assault from the Mediterranean, west of Latakia, and targeted Aleppo International Airport,” Sana said, citing a military source.

The same source reported material damage that put the airport out of service, without mentioning human victims.

The city of Aleppo was hard hit by the earthquake which on February 6 devastated several regions of Syria and neighboring Turkey.

More than 80 humanitarian aid planes have landed at this airport in the past month, Suleiman Khalil, an official at the Syrian Ministry of Transport, told AFP on Tuesday.

“It is no longer possible to receive aid planes until the damage is repaired,” he added.

In recent years, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria, targeting regime positions as well as Iranian and Lebanese Hezbollah forces, key allies of Damascus and sworn enemies of Israel.

Syria’s neighbor Israel rarely comments on the strikes on a case-by-case basis, but has admitted to carrying out hundreds since 2011. The Israeli military has defended them as necessary, saying it wants to prevent Iran from gaining a foothold on its shores. doors.
