True to its reputation. Still solid in the group stage, Switzerland conceded a draw against Scotland (1-1), Wednesday June 19, in Cologne (Germany). With its opening victory against Hungary already in its pocket (3-1), the Nati is taking a big step towards a sixth consecutive qualification for the knockout phase of a major international competition: since the Euro moved to 24 nations in 2016, four points were always enough to reach the round of 16.
After a timid start, the two teams went blow for blow. The Scotsman Scott McTominay opened the scoring with a shot deflected by Fabian Schär (13th), before Xherdan Shaqiri equalized with a first-intention shot into the top corner (26th). The meeting finally started, the opportunities followed one another. Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn defeated Dan Ndoye (32nd) before his Swiss counterpart stopped Che Adams (40th).
In the second half, the goal escaped on the curling shots of the Helvetians Dan Ndoye (58th) and Ruben Vargas (78th), while the post saved Switzerland on a header from stopper Grant Hanley (67th). Nati striker Breel Embolo thought he scored the winning goal ten minutes from time, but he was rightly flagged offside.
Visibly satisfied with the draw point, the Helvetii resisted the latest Scottish attacks. Switzerland will compete for first place with Germany on the last day, Sunday June 23, while Scotland will have to beat Hungary to get out of Group A, after their scathing defeat against Germany in the opening (1-5) .
