The Normandy Regional Health Agency reports bacteriological contamination on the beaches of Urville-Nacqueville, Ravenoville and Foucarville, in the Manche department, reports France Bleu Cotentin on Saturday June 18. The municipalities concerned, La Hague and Sainte-Mère-Eglise, issued bathing ban orders on Friday from 5 p.m.

According to these decrees, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and enterococci bacteria were detected. At La Hague, the ban must last until Tuesday June 21, at least, pending the results of new samples which must be taken on Monday June 20 in order to follow the evolution of the contamination. On the beaches of Ravenoville and Foucarville, the bathing ban is scheduled until June 30.

The Escherichia coli bacterium has been implicated in several cases of contamination in recent days, particularly in the north of Châteauroux where the consumption of tap water has been prohibited since Friday. “In the case of the Mancho beaches, the fact that there are enterococci is a sign that there is a problem of faecal contamination of the waters.explains infectious disease specialist Jean-Paul Stahl on franceinfo. So for the beach it is not the drinking water supply system as in Châteauroux that is in question, but rather the sewers. There’s definitely a problem there.”
