Swimmer Summer McIntosh wins 2nd medal at Paris Games

Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh won gold in the 400-metre individual medley at the Paris Olympics on Monday.

This is the second medal for the 17-year-old from Toronto since the start of the Parisian fortnight. She won silver in the 400m freestyle in the curtain-raiser on Saturday.

McIntosh, the world record holder in the 400 individual medley, led from start to finish at Paris La Défense Arena. She eventually clocked 4 minutes, 27.71 seconds to beat American Katie Grimes by 5.69 seconds. Emma Weyant, also of the United States, was third in 4:34.93.

The Canadian dominated to the point of silencing the noisy spectators who chanted “USA! USA! USA!” before the race.

The 400m IM is the second of four individual events on McIntosh’s schedule at the Paris Games.

Later Monday night, Kylie Masse of LaSalle, Ont., and Ingrid Wilm of Calgary competed in the semifinals of the women’s 100m backstroke. Mary-Sophie Harvey of Trois-Rivières competed in the final of the women’s 200m freestyle.
