Iga Swiatek and Rafael Nadal were crowned ITF world champions on Thursday after winning two Grand Slam titles each in 2022.
The ITF determines its winners based on their results in all tournaments, but also awards extra points for the four major tournaments and team competitions — the Billie Jean King Cup and the Davis Cup.
Nadal triumphed despite finishing the year ranked second in the ATP world rankings behind compatriot Carlos Alcaraz, while Swiatek topped the WTA world rankings.
“Rafa” won this title for the fifth time in his career, after 2008, 2010, 2017 and 2019. He also increased his collection of Grand Slam titles to 22, after winning the Australian Open in January and those from France in June.
For her part, Swiatek won the ITF World Championship title for the first time in her career. The 21-year-old Pole won the French Open and the United States Open to bring her number of career major titles to three.
The winners will be honored by the ITF at a ceremony to be held at the Victoria and Albert museum in London on July 8, on the sidelines of Wimbledon.
