According to a study by French researchers, regular consumption of sweeteners slightly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.

They taste like sugar, without the calories. Sweeteners are now present in all supermarkets, in powder, candy or in “light” drinks. The market, flourishing, does not have only followers. “Sweetener tricks the brain. So I think it’s better to consume sugar directly, which sends the right information to the brain”confides a client.

According to a study conducted on more than 100,000 people, the risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease is slightly higher among consumers of sweeteners than among others. A risk present in case “of regular consumption” and “over a period of time”around “77 mg of sweetener per day on average”, however, specifies Mathilde Touvier, epidemiologist at INSERM. Or a risk for the equivalent of two thirds of a standard can per day. The study focused on the three main synthetic sweeteners found on the market.
