Sweden follows the Danish example. The Swedish government announced on Thursday February 3 its intention to lift almost all of its anti-Covid measures as of February 9. “The pandemic is not over, but we are entering a whole new phase (…) knowledge has improved (…) several studies show that Omicron leads to less severe disease”, Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said at a press conference.

Among the internal measures that will be lifted, bars and restaurants will no longer be required to close at 11 p.m. and the gauge for gatherings will be lifted. In addition, requirements for vaccination certificates for public gatherings will be removed and it will no longer be recommended to wear a mask on public transport in busy times. The return to face-to-face work will be gradual, as will be the case for higher education courses. Some recommendations will remain beyond February 9 for the unvaccinated, such as avoiding indoor crowds.
The total toll since the start of the pandemic has reached 16,028 dead in Sweden according to the latest figures, a number which is within the European average, but significantly higher than that of its Norwegian, Finnish and Danish neighbors.
