For her first film music composition, Katie Austra Stelmanis, Austra by her stage name, is a lace performer. The soundtrack of Swan Song — documentary film by Chelsea McMullan (My Prairie Home) proposing a foray into the National Ballet of Canada during the production of Swan Lake, the farewell show of legendary Ontario dancer Karen Kain — is an album that brilliantly echoes Tchaikovsky’s scores through a Juno-106 synthesizer, a Mellotron and the voice of the producer and author -Toronto composer. Around fifteen pieces, all oscillating between one and three minutes with the exception of the captivating Bow, invite the listener to a thrilling experience, sometimes contemplative, sometimes electrifying. We particularly note the elegant Karen’s Themebut above all the masterful Rothbart who, like the evil character of Swan Lakemakes you experience very intense emotions in such a short time… Swan Song is currently available on CBC Gem.
