To reduce pollution in the capital, the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, called on Parisians to vote for or against a surcharge on the parking of heavy vehicles, Sunday February 4. 220 polling stations welcomed Parisians to find out their opinion on this specific tariff which would affect SUVs and 4x4s in particular. A Parisian who voted “for” explains that these cars “are polluting and take up too much space.”
A climate issue
A Parisian voted against, judging the decision “imbecile”. If the “for” side wins, the price of parking will triple. The cars concerned are thermal and hybrid vehicles weighing more than 1.6 tonnes and electric cars weighing more than two tonnes. For David Belliard, deputy (EELV) at Paris town hall, this vote is crucial to“adapt to the issue of climate change”. A few exceptions should be taken into account: vehicles for disabled people, taxi drivers, craftsmen and health professionals and residential parking lots.
