Sustainable fishing is certainly progressing, but slowly. This is the message delivered this morning by Ifremer, the French Institute for Marine Research. 56% of fish landed in France in 2022 came from sustainable fishing, compared to 54% the previous year. These figures would place France in the European, and even world, average. But behind this French average, the results vary greatly from one region to another. The situation is also very different depending on the fish species. It is rather good for hake or herring, very worrying for sardines or mackerel.

A report of little relevance according to NGOs

For several associations and NGOs, Ifremer’s results are far from relevant. A single consensus among scientists: the common fisheries policy had set the objective of 100% sustainable fishing for 2020, and four years later, we are still very far from it.
