According to an investigation by German television and the New York Times, around twenty Chinese swimmers were doped during the last Olympics, and very protected by their federation.

Chinese swimmers were the heroes of the Tokyo Olympics (Japan) in 2021. They are today splashed by suspicions of doping, according to an investigation carried out by German journalists. “They reveal a possible dysfunction of the World Anti-Doping Agency, that is to say that it was warned of significant positive tests in the Chinese swimming team, 23 in all, and that it simply of an investigation by the Chinese public prosecutor on site”explains Thierry Vildary, journalist in the investigation department of France Télévisions.

No one was then sanctioned. The molecule discovered in Chinese tests is trimetazidine, a drug banned for athletes in 2014 because it is considered doping. “It increases the heart rate and improves oxygen supply”, explains Dr. François Deroche, sports doctor specializing in doping. China, for its part, claims that its athletes were contaminated by food, without explaining that the drug is found in their food. The World Anti-Doping Agency, however, closed the case, and Chinese swimmers will participate in the Paris Olympics.
