Suspect arrested for shooting at Montreal Jewish school in November 2023

The Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) arrested a young man on Wednesday, accused of firing shots at a Jewish school in Montreal last November.

Abdirazak Mahdi Ahmed, 20, appeared in the afternoon at the Montreal courthouse. He was charged with discharging a firearm and mischief.

According to the facts reported by the SPVM, on the morning of November 12, 2023, around 5 a.m., gunshots were heard on Deacon Road, not far from the intersection with Van Horne Avenue, in the borough of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. A suspect was reportedly seen by a witness shooting in the direction of the Yeshiva Gedola Jewish school before quickly fleeing in a vehicle. When they arrived at the scene, the police noticed the impacts of firearm projectiles on the school door and found shell casings on the ground.

An investigation is still underway into the possible participation of one or more other people in this incident.

On Wednesday, the Council of the Jewish Community of Montreal reacted immediately: “This is excellent news. We want to congratulate the police for their perseverance and professionalism,” the organization wrote on X.
