Surviving winter one spa at a time

This text is part of the special book Plaisirs

Nothing like a visit to the spa to perk up in the heart of winter. In addition to the benefits of thermotherapy, the multiple treatments help to soften the harshness of the cold season.

Massage and thermal experience in Montérégie

In Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, in Montérégie, Förena thermal city transports us to Iceland, Germany and Russia thanks to massages and rituals inspired by these corners of the world. We tested the signature massage, which combines lomi-lomi, shiatsu and Californian massage techniques and aims to bring a certain emotional balance. The movements of Manuel, the massage therapist, are like waves. At times it feels like dancing. Tensions are slowly released. Combined with thermal cycles, the effect is amplified. Other highlights of the site include the Aufguss ritual, during which the sauna master performs choreographed movements with a towel during an intensified thermal cycle, as well as sensory stretching, also in the sauna. A restaurant is also located on site. Thermal experience: $80, signature massage: $140.

Diamonds are “Eternal”

Set in a setting of immaculate snow, the Eternel spa, in Saint-David-de-Falardeau, in Saguenay, invites visitors to extend their relaxation by spending the night on site in accommodation halfway between a hotel and ready-to-camp. The three luxurious domes have been available for rental in all seasons since last year. Nestled in the Monts Valin, these comfortable cocoons can accommodate up to four people. Everything is there: electricity, drinking water, heated floors, soft beds, bathroom, fully equipped kitchen, wood stove, fondue stove, Nespresso coffee maker, Wifi, smart television… Not to mention the view of the mountains. At the spa, the Bistro du rêveur showcases local flavors, depending on the season. In particular, we find the aromas of the boreal forest. A few minutes from Le Valinouët ski resort and Imago Village, where Nordic cuisine is in the spotlight at the Yourte Bistro du Nord, the domes can serve as a base camp to alternate between relaxation and winter sports. Snowshoe and snowmobile trails are also nearby. Note that the “diamonds” are not equipped to accommodate people with reduced mobility and that animals are not accepted. Price for one night: from $275.

Winter therapy at Strøm spa

Strøm Nordic Spa, for its part, offers therapy in winter. Beyond the benefits of massage therapy and thermotherapy, the company wants to see Quebecers “live” the cold season rather than suffer it. “It’s not just associated with spas,” explains Myriam Dumont, marketing director of Strøm Nordic Spa. It is a more global concept. We invite people to practice different activities: go on a terrace, drink mulled wine… The idea is to embrace our winter and accept it. In some corners of the world, like Scandinavia, winter is totally embraced. Babies even sleep outside. Starting in March, we are going to open a winter terrace at Mont Saint-Hilaire and in Quebec City and we plan to do so in our other spas as well. Strøm can also be found in L’Île-des-Soeurs and Sherbrooke. So, are we wintering or enjoying the joys of winter?
