The article appeared in The duty of November 30 with the headline “Quebecers in favor of a law on surrogate mothers” refers to the Léger poll conducted on the Web in September among 1000 people. Is there not something questionable in the treatment accorded to the poll when, by extrapolation, we state in printed emphasis, in large blue characters, that “70% is the proportion of Quebecers who support the government intentions to regulate the use of surrogate mothers in law, according to a survey, etc. “? Does a trompe-l’oeil titration have its place?
Added to the questioning is the reaction to the poll, from the Minister of Justice, who declares that “it shows that we are on the right track … that we are responding to the concerns of the population”. To believe that the legalization of the use of surrogate mothers would be no more than a simple formality!
We can be moved at the idea that, in a surge of generosity, a woman conceives a child for the sole purpose of giving it to her infertile sister-in-law! All the same, it remains to be hoped that the consultations in parliamentary committee will ensure that the complexity of the issues raised by Bill 2, particularly on the ethical level, is brought to light.
