Surprise Hamas offensive | International reactions

(Paris) The United States, Europeans and many capitals around the world strongly condemned Hamas’ attacks against Israel on Saturday, with Berlin highlighting a risk of “major regional escalation”. Russia, for its part, called on both parties for restraint and a ceasefire, while its Iranian ally welcomed the Palestinian offensive. Here are the main reactions.

Joe Biden insisted on Saturday, in a very short and solemn speech at the White House, that the United States’ support for Israel was “set in stone and unshakeable”.

“Today, the people of Israel are under attack by a terrorist organization, Hamas. At this tragic moment, I want to tell him, the world and terrorists everywhere: the United States stands with Israel. We will never fail to support them,” added the American president.

The Pentagon said it would ensure Israel has “what it needs to defend itself.”

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen condemned attacks amounting to “terrorism in its most despicable form”, and considered that Israel had “the right to defend itself”.

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, denounced the “appalling” hostage-taking of civilians and called for their “immediate” release. He expressed the EU’s “solidarity” with Israel.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he condemned “in the strongest possible terms the attack this morning by Hamas on Israeli towns”. He urged the international community to “diplomatic efforts to avoid a widening of the conflagration” between Israel and Hamas.

The UN envoy for the Middle East, Tor Wennesland, condemned “abominable attacks” by Hamas against Israel and called for their “immediate” end, specifying that he was in contact with all parties to ask them in particular to “ protect civilians.”

Qatar urged all parties to “exercise utmost restraint”.
