(Ottawa) The Chief Justice of Canada welcomes the appointment of the first Indigenous justice to the Supreme Court of Canada.

In a statement Friday, Richard Wagner says Michelle O’Bonsawin has proven herself to be principled, genuine and hardworking throughout her career as a lawyer and judge.
Mme O’Bonsawin, who replaces outgoing judge Michael Moldaver, is a fully bilingual Franco-Ontarian and Abenaki member of the Odanak First Nation located east of Sorel-Tracy, Quebec.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau nominated Justice O’Bonsawin earlier this month and on Friday confirmed her appointment to the nation’s highest court effective June 1.er september.
She will take the oath the same day during a private ceremony at the Supreme Court. An official welcoming ceremony will take place in November.
