Thursday, November 30, the Russian Supreme Court banned “the international LGBT movement” for extremism. Activists and homosexuals now face up to 12 years in prison.
The Russian Supreme Court delivered its verdict on Thursday, November 30. Now, LGBT+ rights activists and gay people can be prosecuted or incarcerated, with sentences of up to 12 years in prison. The Supreme Court judges the international LGBT movement and its subsidiaries to be extremist. “It seems to me that there are other problems in my country, such as homeless people or seriously ill people”denounces an activist.
An ultraconservative turn
Vladimir Putin’s Russia poses as the standard bearer of the values it describes as “traditional”. This ultraconservative shift has accelerated since the Russian offensive in Ukraine. For NGOs, the broad interpretation permitted by the law will contribute to increasing repression against LGBT+ communities. This repression has already been underway for several months. Last summer, Russian MPs passed a law targeting transgender people, banning them from transitioning.
