Super-G of St. Moritz | Lara Gut-Behrami beats Sofia Goggia

(Saint-Moritz) It was Lara Gut-Behrami’s turn to surprise Sofia Goggia in super-G at the Alpine Skiing World Cup in Saint-Moritz on Saturday, thus reversing the results of their duel which had taken place in Canada last weekend.

Gut-Behrami subtracted 0.18 seconds from Goggia’s time on the demanding Saint-Moritz course, as light snow fell on the area and the thermometer indicated minus-7 degrees Celsius.

Gut-Behrami’s very aggressive style allowed him to record a 33e career World Cup victory, at the same place where she had savored her first career triumph. This victory, acquired in December 2008, had occurred in super-G at Corviglia, when she was only 17 years old.

American Mikaela Shiffrin conceded exactly one second to third-place Goggia to maintain the top spot in the overall World Cup standings.

It was only Shiffrin’s second World Cup super-G in almost two years, after she took a break from the sprint events. She was sixth place last Sunday in Lake Louise, Alta., As Goggia beat Gut-Behrami by 0.11 seconds.

Marie-Michèle Gagnon, of Lac-Etchemin, was Canada’s top skier by virtue of her 13e place 2.42 seconds from Gut-Behrami. His compatriot Roni Remme was unable to complete the event.

Slovakian Petra Vlhova, holder of the big crystal globe, was absent from the World Cup in St. Moritz, which culminates on Sunday with another super-G.
