Crosby gives Penguins victory
Sidney Crosby scored with 2:14 left in the third period as the Pittsburgh Penguins upset the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 on Sunday night and solidify their hold on second place in the Metropolitan Division.
Evgeni Malkin had a goal and an assist, Chad Ruhwedel rounded out the scoring and Bryan Rust had two assists in the Penguins’ second straight victory. Casey DeSmith blocked 32 shots to maintain a clean record at 3-0 against the Jackets.
This gain allows the Penguins to move a little further away from the New York Rangers who follow them three points behind in third place in the Metropolitan.
Oliver Bjorkstrand and Jack Roslovic scored for the Blue Jackets, who suffered a second loss in a row. Elvis Merzlikins blocked 37 shots.
Bjorkstrand started the Jackets ahead with a one-timer at 4:44 of the first period. This goal was his 100and career in the National Hockey League.
Ruhwedel tied everyone up at the very end of the period by surprising Merzlikins out of position.
Roslovic restored the lead to the hosts midway through the second period, but the Penguins saved the best for last.
Malkin first tied the game by extending his streak to five games with at least one point. He took advantage of a power play to complete a tic-tac-toe initiated by Jake Guentzel and Rust at 11:54 of the third period. Then, Crosby gave the victory to his team by rushing to the net to recover a loose puck and slide it into a net abandoned by Merzlikins.
The latter tried to intervene to prevent Crosby from deflecting a shot out of his reserved area. The two players made contact and Merzlikins found himself on the ice as Crosby pushed the puck into the net. The play was reviewed and the goal was awarded.
