Hurricanes defeat Devils thanks to Svechnikov

Andrei Svechnikov scored the game-clinching goal in the shootout and Antti Raanta blocked 24 shots to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 5-4 win over the New Jersey Devils on Sunday.

In doing so, the Hurricanes signed an 11e straight win, a franchise record. They’re 15-0-2 in their last 17 meetings and haven’t lost since a 4-3 overtime loss at Anaheim on Dec. 6.

Their last loss in regulation dates back to November 23.

With the win, Raanta improved to 10-2-2 this season. The 33-year-old Finn had shutouts in his last two home games, 4-0 against the Florida Panthers and 3-0 against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Both goalies made great saves in overtime, especially Mackenzie Blackwood, who frustrated Jaccob Slavin who went on a breakaway.

Blackwood finished the game with 43 saves.

Both clubs scored five goals in the third period.

As the two clubs played four against four, Jesper Bratt scored his second goal of the match and his 14e of the season to give the Devils a 4-3 lead at 13:48 of the third period.

Martin Necas tied the score on a power play at 15:32.

Derek Stepan scored two goals for the Hurricanes, the other going to Sebastian Aho’s record.

Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier also hit the target on the Devils side.

The loss leaves the Devils 2-7-2 in their last 11 outings.
