Summer in Pau is back in action in 2022, and takes up residence on the stage of the Théâtre de Verdure, at Parc Beaumont, from July 21 to August 6. On the program for this 41st edition, 11 free evenings outdoor concerts without health restrictions, enough to do good for the event after two years marked by the covid and a festival in a smaller format. 19 artists in all will perform at Parc Beaumont. The festival starts strong, with a first date where the famous Malian duo Adamou & Mariam are headlining.
A festival at more than 100,000 euros
The festival is free, largely financed by the municipality of Pau, but you still have to reserve your place to attend the concert. A ticket office is set up on the festival website. “We are at around 110,000 euros for two and a half weeks of the festival, counting only the artistic budget” explains Edwige Larralde, head of the organizing association, the Friends of Popular Song (ACP). “A headliner today costs between 60 and 80,000 euros for an artist with a certain notoriety” she details. “The consequence is that there are many artists that we cannot afford to welcome”simply because they are too expensive, but also because they can be taken at other festivals.
A competition that we have to anticipate explains Edwige Larralde. “Today, establishing a program also means resolving an equation, because many parameters come into play: there are quite a few festivals in New Aquitaine which can have exclusivity over artists, so there are artists that we could, that we would like to have, but we cannot because of the other commitments they have made”.
