Anyone who has ever had the chance to see Hot Chip in concert already knows very well how the collective spirit of these English people works. Over the past two decades, they have gone from sound sorcerer’s apprentices – Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard have known each other since childhood – to grand masters of electro-pop fusion.
On this eighth album, successor to A Bathfull Of Ecstasy released in 2019, recorded at their home in London, at five, the funk temptation is evident, marked from start to finish. They even made a title out of it, Hard To Be Funky. Here, the trend is also towards openness, letting go, in collaborations for example. On Freakout/Releasethe track that gives its title to the album, we hear the inimitable touch of the Belgian duo Soulwax…
While Canadian rapper Cadence Weapon brings a touch rarely heard from Hot Chip on the title The Evil That Men Do. Without ever departing from this second melancholy reading, deeper, which provokes in Hot Chip this second of ecstasy coupled with an infinite sadness, the mark of the groups which knew how to make their music a real identity.
