Sugar is present in almost all processed products. Everyone consumes it on a daily basis without necessarily knowing it, reveals a survey. Obviously, this has an impact on health. Reporting.

Whether plain, vinegared, or salted, they have one thing in common: a bowl of chips contains around eight pieces of sugar. For a slice of frozen pizza, there would be the equivalent of five. Sugar is found everywhere, including in foods from which we think it is absent: this is what a study by ANSES, the national food safety agency, demonstrates. The latter reviewed nearly 40,000 products, a first in Europe.

A worrying assessment

The survey reveals significant figures for the presence of sugar in these processed foods: at least 94% of prepared sauces contain sugar. This is 87% for infant milk, 84% for cold meats, 77% for fresh catered products and 71% for fresh cooked meals. This omnipresence of sugar would be useful for manufacturers according to ANSES, since it could have an acidity correcting effect.
