Sudan is located at a “catastrophic and cataclysmic breaking point”the International Organization for Migration (IOM) warned on Monday, August 12. “Without immediate, global, massive and coordinated action, we risk witnessing the avoidable deaths of tens of thousands of people in the coming months.”says Othman Belbeisi, the UN agency’s director for the Middle East and North Africa region.

According to the IOM, famine and floods have added to a long list of challenges facing millions of people in the war-torn country, leading to “one of the worst humanitarian situations in the world”. “Restrictions on humanitarian access, including those imposed by the parties involved, have significantly reduced aid that could have saved many lives.”denounced Othman Belbeisi.

Since June, torrential rains have hit the north and east of the country, forcing more than 20,000 people from their homes, according to the UN. IOM is calling for urgent funding to “those seeking shelter, who need food, water, or even medical services.”

Sudan has been embroiled in a war since April 2023 between the regular army of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of his former deputy, General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. This conflict has left tens of thousands dead according to the UN. More than 10.7 million people have been displaced across the country and 2.3 million others have had to flee to neighboring countries.
