Subsidizing luxury | Duty

During an obligatory visit to a shopping center in Quebec, I saw luxury Italian cars. I approach to discover that they cost $70,000 plus tax, or $80,500. It’s crazy! Ah but, the car is electric. GOOD. With that comes a $5,000 manufacturer rebate. Alright. Then a government subsidy of $10,000. Scandalous. If you can afford to pay more than $80,000 for a private car, do you need public money “help”? I haven’t had a car for over 30 years. My participation in decarbonization is significant. Walk, bus, bike. And yet, I receive no subsidy, no significant improvement in public transportation (I’m waiting for the tram in Quebec…), no interurban transportation worthy of the name, not even a tax credit. My bike is not subsidized… it is even taxed!

The subsidies to allow financially well-off people to strut around in a luxury electric sedan (not as clean as people make it out to be) make me nauseous.
