Submerged ATV in Abitibi-Témiscamingue | A woman loses her life, a man and a toddler rescued

(Rivière-Héva) The ride of three individuals aboard an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) on Lake Fournière, in the municipality of Rivière-Héva, in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, turned into a nightmare Thursday afternoon. A man and a toddler were rescued from the freezing waters, but a woman lost her life.

According to the first information from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), the frozen surface of the lake would have given way while the three people were on board the ATV.

The 23-year-old went missing moments before being located by emergency services. She was transported to a hospital center where she was unfortunately pronounced dead.

The 24-year-old man and child were transported to a hospital. They are both suffering from hypothermia, but their lives would not be in danger.

“The side-by-side all-terrain vehicle in which they were riding would have been submerged in the water while the ice would have broken under the vehicle,” explained SQ spokesperson Hélène St-Pierre.

An investigation is underway to establish the causes and circumstances of the accident.
