The new Toyota Corolla Cross 2022 is arriving at dealerships across Quebec these days. This new utility vehicle will compete with the Subaru Crosstrek, a very popular vehicle in our market.
How do these two utilities compare? To help you see more clearly, we have analyzed their specifications.
Powertrains: the Subaru Crosstrek advantage
The Toyota Corolla Cross is powered by a single 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. Only a CVT box is on the menu. The customer can choose between a two-wheel or four-wheel drive.
Subaru takes an approach completely opposite to that of Toyota, preferring to give an array of options. The lineup begins with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. Everything can be paired with a manual or CVT gearbox.
In addition, this same displacement is offered with a plug-in hybrid system. The combined power then amounts to 148 horsepower, while the range is limited to 27 kilometers. For those who want more power, a 2.5-liter grinder with 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft is also in the catalog. Finally, all variants of the Crosstrek use all-wheel drive.
Since Subaru offers a greater variety of powertrains in addition to a plug-in hybrid model, the Crosstrek easily wins this round.
Consumption: Subaru Crosstrek advantage
Unsurprisingly, the Subaru Crosstrek also wins in this category thanks to its plug-in hybrid version, whose average consumption is 6.7 L / 100 km.
Equipped with the 2.0-liter engine, the SUV drinks 7.9 L / 100 km (9.4 L / 100 km with the manual transmission) at the pump. With the 2.5-liter, the figure rises to 8.0 L / 100 km.
As for the Corolla Cross, the front-wheel drive version is rated at 7.3 L / 100 km and climbs to 7.8 L / 100 km with all-wheel drive.
Practical side: Toyota Corolla Cross advantage
These two subcompact SUVs can accommodate a maximum of five passengers. Their towing capacity is identical: 680 kg (1,500 lb). By the way, the turning diameter is also very similar.
Despite everything, the Toyota Corolla Cross wins this round thanks to its bulkier layout. By lowering the seats, the capacity varies between 1,841 and 1,869 liters, against the Crosstrek which offers between 1,220 and 1,565 liters.
When the bench is up, the Corolla Cross offers a trunk with a dimension of 680 to 736 liters. The Subaru, meanwhile, provides 447 to 588 liters. Note that the volumes depend on the versions and options chosen for each vehicle.
Security: information not available
In terms of safety, the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid holds the distinction Top Safety Pick + from the American organization Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The other versions of the Crosstrek are not left out and benefit from the mention Top Safety Pick.
Since this is a new model, the Toyota Corolla Cross has yet to be evaluated by the IIHS at the time of this writing.
From a technological point of view, the two vehicles offer similar driving aids. Toyota uses the Safety Sense 2.0 suite and Subaru uses the EyeSight package. Several active safety systems are therefore on the menu.
Technological integration: equality
You will find essentially the same technologies and functionalities on board. This is a matter of preference.
As standard, both models are compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto applications. The infotainment system is flanked by a seven-inch screen at Toyota and 6.5 inches at Subaru. Manufacturers also provide an eight inch monitor.
A high-end sound system is available. On the cockpit, the instrumentation measures 4.2 inches for both SUVs. As an option, the Toyota offers seven inches and the Subaru, 6.3 inches.

Excluding the hybrid version of the Crosstrek, the price range of these two SUVs is very comparable.
