The site, built at a total cost of 34 billion yen ($373 million), will be located in the heart of a vast park in the Aichi department, about 300 km west of Tokyo.

Three of the five areas that will make up the park can be explored this year, including the house of the characters from Totoroin the heart of Japanese countryside landscapes, a local official told AFP.

“Visitors will be able to go inside a statue of Totoro behind the house, ”he added, saying he could not at this stage give details of the rates.

Two other areas, inspired by the movies Princess Mononoke, Kiki’s Delivery Service and The Howl’s Moving Castlewill be inaugurated next year.

Studio Ghibli was co-founded by Hayao Miyazaki, director of many of the studio’s cult feature films, including Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) or Spirited awaywhich won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2002.
